Whether you’re looking for a new treat to reward your dog, or your dog just scooped up some mango that accidentally fell on the floor, you’ll be happy to know that mango is pretty safe for dogs to eat (with a few caveats).

Precautions To Take When Sharing Mango With Your Dog

For the most part, the flesh of a mango is a safe and nutritious treat to share with your dog. However, there are a few steps you should take to avoid possible dangers with this fruit:

  • Remove The Pit – Mango pits can become a choking hazard or get lodged in your dog’s digestive tract. Chewing on a mango pit could also break teeth. Always make sure to remove the pit before sharing this snack with your pup.
  • Peel The Skin – Mango skin can be hard for dogs to digest. Technically, your dog can eat mango skin without much harm, but it may cause tummy troubles (a.k.a explosive poops and skunk farts)
  • Feed In Moderation – As with all dog treats, share in moderation. Treats—including mango—should be limited to 10% of your dog’s daily calories1. Too much mango can cause an upset tummy, diarrhea, or increase your dog’s risk of becoming a chonk-o-saurus rex over time.

How Much Mango Can I Give My Dog?

How much mango you can give to your pup is really going to depend on the size of your dog. Like we mentioned above, you should limit your dog’s treats to 10% of their daily calories. Since small breeds are going to eat fewer calories than a large breed per day, that also means they should get fewer chunks of mango. To give you an idea of approximately how much mango is appropriate for your dog, here’s a few examples (this would be the maximum amount if you’re not giving them any other treats):

Small Dog (10lbs) – 1/4 cup mango slices per day
Medium Dog (20lbs) – 1/3 cup mango slices per day
Large Dog (60lbs) – 3/4 cup mango slices per day
A Big Ol’ Boy or Girl (100lbs+) – 1 cup mango slices per day

Mango Nutrition And Benefits

Mangos have a lot of nutritional benefits for your pup. They’re high in fiber, as well as Vitamins C and A. However, like most fruits, they’re high in sugar, so make sure to share with your four-legged friend in moderation.
